Languages & integration

Speaking the language of the host country changes everything: understanding a doctor, talking with a teacher, looking for a job, helping your children at school.
This page helps you identify options for learning Greek (and sometimes English) and for integrating more easily into Greek society.

1. Why learn Greek (and English)?

Learning Greek, and if possible a bit of English, makes it easier to:

  • communicate with doctors, teachers and the administration
  • be more independent in everyday tasks (transport, shops, public services)
  • access more job and training opportunities
  • better understand Greek culture and meet new people

Even a few simple phrases, learned and repeated, can already improve your daily life.

2. Types of courses available

In Greece, there are several ways to learn:

  • Free or low-cost Greek classes organised by NGOs, community centres or evening schools
  • English classes for people who want to work with international organisations or in tourism
  • Conversation workshops in small groups to practise speaking with volunteers
  • Online courses (apps, videos, websites) to learn at your own pace from your phone

Some organisations also offer specific courses for women, parents or young people.

3. How to choose the right course

To choose a course that fits your needs, you can:

  • check the level (beginner, intermediate, etc.) and the language used by the teacher
  • ask if there is childcare available or if children can join the session
  • get information about the timetable, location and any possible cost
  • try several courses before deciding

The goal is not to speak perfectly, but to make a little progress every week.

4. Integration through activities

Language learning is more effective when it is linked to real activities, for example:

  • Homework clubs for children and teenagers
  • Creative workshops (cooking, sewing, sport, music) where people speak Greek and English
  • Discussion groups between refugees, migrants and Greek residents
  • Volunteering with a local organisation, with kind and safe support

Each activity is an opportunity to practise the language in a real and secure context.

5. Useful organisations and resources

If you already have experience in teaching or translation, you can also offer your help as a volunteer via the page “Contact & Participation”.
