Cultural life & participation

Cultural and community life helps break isolation, rebuild confidence, and create a sense of belonging in Greek society.
This page presents simple ways to take part in cultural life in Greece while keeping your Afghan identity alive.

Why culture matters

Culture makes it possible to:

  • express emotions after difficult experiences
  • build bridges between people (Greeks, Afghans, other communities)
  • help children and young people feel proud of their talents
  • share your story, your language, and your traditions

Taking part in a cultural activity, even once a month, can already change your daily life.

2. Types of activities you can join

Depending on your interests and your free time, you can:

  • take part in artistic workshops (theatre, music, dance, drawing, photography)
  • join a neighbourhood association that organises intercultural events
  • attend film screenings, talks, or exhibitions about migration and human rights
  • propose Afghan activities (cooking, poetry, language, music) in spaces that are open to the public

Many organisations are looking not only for participants, but also for volunteers to help prepare and run these events.

3. Becoming an active part of the community

You can also play an active role by:

  • offering your help to welcome other Afghan families
  • translating or explaining important information to people who speak less French or Greek
  • sharing your experience in discussion groups or workshops
  • taking part in parent–teacher meetings at school or neighbourhood gatherings

Every small action helps build a more inclusive and supportive society.

4. Examples of cultural initiatives

Here are some types of initiatives that show how culture can support integration:

  • Theatre projects with refugees workshops that use play, speech and movement to tell stories and create a shared meeting space.
  • Art workshops for young people drawing, music, video and other activities that help develop creativity and self-confidence.
  • Intercultural events cooking evenings, neighbourhood festivals, “Afghan culture” days to showcase the richness of your country of origin.

Ask at local social centres, NGOs or municipal services to find out which activities are available near you.

5. Take part through Afghan Community

The Afghan Community – Migrants & Refugees – Greece project also aims to:

  • give more visibility to initiatives led by Afghans in Greece
  • highlight cultural, community and educational events
  • build bridges between the Afghan community, Greeks and other communities

If you are organising an activity or would like to become a volunteer, you can contact us via the page “Contact & Participation”.
Together, we can help build a richer, fairer and more open cultural life for everyone.
